How Well Does Your AI Assistant Really Know You?
When you communicate with an artificial intelligence assistant over a long period of time, you may begin to feel that it knows you. It may remember questions you have asked before, your interests, your aesthetic concerns and some of the personal information you have shared. This can create the impression that artificial intelligence is providing an assessment tailored specifically to you, particularly when you seek advice about aesthetic surgery. However, being “known” by artificial intelligence is not the same as being evaluated by a plastic surgeon.
Artificial intelligence generates responses only from the information you write, upload or make accessible to the system. It cannot observe you in real life, examine your body or always recognise whether the information you provide is incomplete or inaccurate. Therefore, even when it appears to know a great deal about you, it does not possess the personal and clinical information required to determine whether you need aesthetic surgery.
What Can Artificial Intelligence Know About You?
Artificial intelligence can learn your age, height, weight, previous operations or aesthetic expectations only if you choose to share this information. The fact that you have previously asked questions about a tummy tuck, liposuction or breast surgery does not mean that you need one of these procedures. Artificial intelligence may remember the subjects in which you have shown an interest, but it cannot know with certainty why you were interested in them.
For example, researching BBL surgery does not necessarily mean that you want to undergo the procedure. You may be looking for information on behalf of someone close to you, comparing different procedures or simply satisfying your curiosity. Artificial intelligence may make certain assumptions based on your questions, but an assumption is not the same as an individualised medical assessment.
Are Photographs Enough for Artificial Intelligence to Know You?
Uploading a photograph of your body to an artificial intelligence assistant does not mean that it can fully assess your anatomical characteristics. A photograph is an image captured from a particular angle, under specific lighting conditions and while the body is static. Skin quality, the structure of fat tissue, the condition of the muscles and the movement of the tissues cannot be fully understood from a photograph.
Artificial intelligence may suggest that there is excess skin in the abdominal area or comment on body proportions. However, it cannot reliably determine whether the appearance is related to skin laxity, fat accumulation, muscle separation, skeletal structure or posture. It may therefore be said that artificial intelligence can see you, but not that it truly understands your anatomy.
Why Can Artificial Intelligence Not Decide What Aesthetic Procedure You Need?
Decisions in aesthetic surgery are not based solely on changing a visible area of the body. The person’s medical history, medications, weight fluctuations, pregnancy plans, smoking status and previous operations must all be assessed. Even when artificial intelligence asks about these factors, it cannot combine them with physical findings to reach a clinical decision.
The same appearance may require different procedures in different individuals. Liposuction may be considered for one person who is concerned about the abdominal area, while a tummy tuck or a different approach may be more appropriate for another. In some cases, surgery may not be recommended at all. Artificial intelligence can provide information about the available options, but it cannot determine which option is necessary, suitable or safe.
Can It Truly Understand Your Expectations?
The desire to undergo aesthetic surgery may not be related solely to a physical feature. Social media, comments from others, changing beauty standards or a particular period in a person’s life may influence body image. A consultation with a plastic surgeon aims to understand not only which procedure may be performed, but also why the person wants a change.
Artificial intelligence can analyse the words you use and make observations about your emotions and expectations. However, it cannot assess your tone of voice, hesitation, body language or reactions to questions in the same way as a physician. It may also be unable to distinguish consistently between temporary dissatisfaction and a realistic expectation that has remained stable over time.
An Assistant That Knows You or a Tool That Provides Information?
When an artificial intelligence assistant remembers previous conversations, it can adapt its responses to your interests. This may make the research process easier and help you prepare for a consultation with a plastic surgeon. However, a personalised response is not the same as an individualised medical assessment.
Artificial intelligence knows you only to the extent of the information you have shared. It cannot fully understand how your body feels, the characteristics of your tissues, the effect of your health on surgery or the personal meaning of your expectations. Artificial intelligence can therefore provide information about aesthetic procedures, but it cannot decide what you need. That decision should be made together with a plastic surgeon following a face-to-face consultation and physical examination.
