Can Artificial Intelligence Make the Right Decision in Body Contouring? The Risk of Disproportionate Trend-Driven Bodies
At certain times, similar body contours may become prominent on social media. A narrow waist, pronounced buttocks, greater breast volume or a sharply defined abdomen can quickly become popular. Artificial intelligence tools may also be influenced by these frequently encountered images and interpret certain body types as more attractive or ideal.
However, the popularity of a particular appearance does not mean that it is suitable for everyone. Artificial intelligence can recognise trends, alter body photographs and provide information about different aesthetic procedures. Nevertheless, it cannot independently determine which body shape would be balanced, achievable and safe for a particular individual.
How Is Artificial Intelligence’s Understanding of Aesthetics Formed?
Artificial intelligence does not develop a personal understanding of aesthetics in the same way that humans do. It generates responses based on large numbers of images, texts and recurring patterns presented to it. When a particular body type is shared more frequently online, artificial intelligence may present that appearance as normal, desirable or ideal.
Social media tends to make visually striking bodies more visible. Camera angles, filters, digital editing and carefully selected surgical results do not fully reflect the diversity of bodies in real life. Artificial intelligence cannot always distinguish how much of this content is natural, digitally altered or surgically achievable.
Are the Same Body Measurements Suitable for Everyone?
Body contouring is not determined solely by the measurements of the waist, buttocks or breasts. Shoulder width, the diameter of the rib cage, pelvic structure, leg length, height and muscle distribution all contribute to the overall appearance. The same buttock or breast volume may look entirely different in two people with different skeletal structures.
A particular breast volume placed on a narrow rib cage will not create the same appearance when used on a broader chest. Similarly, a body design created without considering the relationship between hip width, waist circumference and the shoulders may appear inconsistent with the person’s natural proportions.
Artificial intelligence can easily alter measurements in a photograph. However, it cannot determine whether the digitally generated appearance can be supported by the person’s tissues and skeletal structure.
Why Can Trend-Driven Bodies Appear Disproportionate?
Trends often emphasise a single area of the body. While the waist is made narrower, the buttocks larger or the breasts more prominent, the relationship between that area and the rest of the body may be overlooked. This approach can cause an individually striking feature to appear disproportionate within the overall body structure.
In images generated by artificial intelligence, these changes can be applied without meaningful limitations. The waist can be narrowed, any desired volume can be added to the buttocks and breast size can be changed with ease. In the real body, however, skin elasticity, the amount of available fat, muscle structure, skeletal characteristics and safe surgical limits must all be considered.
Can Artificial Intelligence Understand Your Individual Anatomy?
Artificial intelligence can analyse the external contours visible in a body photograph, but it cannot fully assess skin quality, fat distribution or muscle structure. It cannot know with certainty how a change that appears suitable in a photograph would look in real life or how the tissues would respond to it.
The body is also more than a static image. Posture, spinal structure, gait and the way a person distributes weight across the legs can all affect body proportions. A digital design that appears balanced in a still photograph may not maintain the same harmony when the person moves.
Are Digital Simulations Realistic Goals?
Body simulations generated with artificial intelligence may help a person imagine a different appearance. However, these images should not be regarded as a surgical plan or a definitive result that must be achieved. The fact that an image appears realistic does not mean that it is surgically achievable.
Digital design may not account for wound healing, blood supply, the capacity of the skin or the risk of complications. Artificial intelligence cannot understand a patient’s medical history, surgical risks or individual healing characteristics from an image alone.
How Should Decisions About Body Contouring Be Made?
The aim of body contouring is not to reproduce a body that is popular on social media in another person. Planning should take into account the individual’s anatomy, expectations, health status and the balance between different areas of the body. Some requests may be adapted within anatomical limits, while others may not be considered safe or realistic.
Artificial intelligence can introduce different options and visualise possible appearances. However, it cannot decide which change is appropriate for a particular person. Decisions about body contouring should not be directed by trends, but should be made together with a plastic surgeon following a physical examination and an individualised assessment.
